Lam Labs was founded to allow us to develop ideas beyond the scope of design projects and engage in contemporary lighting discourse across multiple disciplines, including but not limited to daylighting, light and health, digital tools, and community engagement. Bill Lam founded his first firm, Lam Workshop in 1949 (incorporated as Lam Inc. in 1951) – explicitly as a design research firm investigating the integration of electric light and architecture, focused on the creation of new lighting products. The research was primarily at the industrial design scale, and Lam lighting products are still on the market today. He transitioned this business into the lighting design consulting firm in 1961 under the name William Lam Associates, with a continued emphasis on design research. During this time Lam published 2 seminal texts during this period integrating his, and other’s research into electric lighting in “Perception and Lighting as Formgivers for Architecture”(1977) and “Sunlighting as Formgiver for Architecture” (1986). Lam Labs continues Bill’s pioneering spirit in our contemporary practice.
