The client is a contemporary law firm who was focused on creating both a welcoming and high-end environment for their new offices in downtown Boston. Elegant and well-tailored, the office is complete with architectural and millwork details that add richness to the surfaces. The lighting was designed to reinforce these details through integration and alignment that create deliberately subtle shades of white and introduces complementary decorative elements that accessorize and add sparkle.

The office is primarily composed of both private offices and open workspaces, conference rooms, common areas and specialty cafes. A special “client-facing” floor was also included in the design with a lobby, larger conference rooms, and flexible training spaces.  Diffuse lighting both from indirect sources and backlit translucent stretched fabric membranes, along with direct light sources, creates a pleasing and bright environment. Additionally, the client has a large art collection that required curating focused light almost every location of artwork, treating the corridors as an art gallery.

This adaptive reuse project transformed 63,000 square feet of a 19th century industrial building into a 21st century research facility for SQZ Biotech (“Squeeze”). Daylight entering through ample skylights and windows satisfies much of the lighting needs during the day. On cloudy days and after dark, a bold lighting solution provides general lighting throughout by indirectly lighting the high sloped ceilings, avoiding the clutter and complexity of hanging fixtures throughout the large volumes. Additional illuminance levels at the lab benches are provided by a unique integrated bench lighting system. Overall lighting power density for the project, approximately half-lab and half-office, is only 0.45 w/ft2 resulting in a $39,697 Mass Save Performance Lighting incentive payment to the owner.

Innovation is the lifeblood of the technology industry. It’s fueled by strong collaborations and serendipitous collisions between dissimilar ideas.  The lighting story for this multinational technology company begins with a concept sketch, illustrating three basic zones in the heart of the work area. Solitary activities, such as walking, are rendered only with pools of light. Focus areas highlight tasks, but also introduce synapses of sparkle in a porous lid. Collaboration spaces are bathed with illumination, folding in daylight. One- and two-story sanctuaries filled with daylight and luminous decorative elements are used to relax the eye, by focusing on distant views.

Kronos Offices

Corporate
LOCATION: Lowell, MA
COMPLETED: 2018
SIZE: 465,000 SF
OWNERS: Kronos
ARCHITECT: Packard Design

DESIGN TEAM:Justin Brown

Comprising 6,000 employees worldwide, the multi-national workforce and human capital management cloud provider, Kronos, had outgrown their previous location in Chelmsford, MA, and selected the iconic Cross Point office tower complex in Lowell for their new global headquarters in 2016. Now centralized and spread across 16 floors, their new 465,000 square foot space affords a combination of private and open offices, conference rooms, and breakout spaces within generous common areas.

A combination of architecturally-integrated uplighting, wallwashing, and decorative pendants in bold geometric forms emphasize the architectural features that are primarily situated around the building cores and common areas. Not to be ignored, the predominant open offices benefit from a fun interpretation of the Kronos logo. The seemingly normal direct/indirect linear pendants lighting these spaces take a different direction by literally changing direction; at the end of each run, the custom pendants bend upwards at the same angle as the lines in the company logo and help mark the circulation zones around the workstations.

Conceived as a vertical ecosystem, the Boston headquarters includes a number of themed, hospitality-style spaces for employees to enjoy and use as a retreat from standard office-style environments. The lighting design mimics this intended style with warm and inviting fixtures and pendants throughout the robust amenity hubs. Lighting details also incorporate Rapid7’s signature orange color, most prominent in the four-story atrium and connecting stair.

The facility accommodates hundreds of new employees and visitors, while creating enhanced work, research, training, and amenity spaces. A custom pendant in the shape of the Abiomed logo greets visitors in the reception area. Office lighting provides an ambient environment with y-shaped pendants scattered throughout work areas, while soft uplights and focused downlights are used in more informal lounge spaces and employee break areas. Landscape lighting also complements the new signature entrance and vehicular drop off area, with soft-lit bollards that create a dramatic but functional effect.

A world leader in journalism, the Boston Globe recently relocated from their Morrissey Boulevard facility to floors two and three of 53 State Street in vibrant downtown Boston. The renovation includes offices space, conference rooms, common areas featuring social spaces, a newsroom “hub,” and re-use of a grand staircase in the building lobby as their main entrance. Seeking a clean and minimalistic aesthetic, the lobby uses discreet low-brightness downlights interspersed with decorative pendants and repurposes the ‘B’ and ‘G’ from the Globe’s former headquarters sign. Office spaces are comfortably bright, taking advantage of linear fixtures integrated within the ACT support system. Conference rooms extend this clean aesthetic, employing a rectilinear ring of light around each room with a blade of clear acrylic.
