Post Event Recap: Walkable Boston: Lighting the Urban Nightscape

Last week, Lam Partners had the pleasure of co-hosting Walkable Boston: Lighting the Urban Nightscape as part of the official AIA25 Conference in Boston. In collaboration with Bartholomew | Lighting and Light Justice, the evening tour brought attendees through the heart of downtown—starting at Boston City Hall and winding through Downtown Crossing, Beacon Hill, and beyond.
Together, we explored how lighting shapes our experience of the city at night—its impact on safety, visibility, equity, and community identity. The walking tour sparked dynamic conversations around light pollution, access to public space, and the power of thoughtful lighting design to promote more inclusive, walkable urban environments.
From the glow of historic landmarks to the quiet shadows of side streets, participants experienced firsthand the design decisions—both intentional and incidental—that influence how we navigate the city after dark. A lively pre-tour reception and a nighttime scavenger hunt added energy and insight, setting the stage for an engaging, reflective journey through Boston’s illuminated public realm.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on this memorable night—and to our incredible partners for making this event possible. Let’s continue the conversation around light, justice, and the future of our cities.
