Located in the heart of America’s Great Plains, the Oklahoma State Capitol is celebrated with an exterior lighting design inspired by the region’s vast sky and surrounding landscape. Each evening at sunset, the building comes alive with a fleeting display of reds, oranges, yellows, and blues that mirror the sky’s colors, marking the day’s end with a unique and memorable experience. As night falls, warm white light bathes the limestone, pink granite, and concrete dome, elegantly highlighting the building’s architectural details.

The design was carefully developed through 3D modeling and photometric simulations, using subtle gradients to evoke the smooth transitions of a sunset. Color temperatures were thoughtfully chosen to complement the Capitol’s natural materials.

A rigorous mockup phase refined mounting details, fixture placement, optics, output, and color gradients. In close collaboration with the architect and engineers, Lam Partners developed mounting strategies, control systems, and lighting scenes to deliver a flexible, easily maintained solution that honors the building’s historic presence.
