Prominently positioned at the new Medford/Tufts stop on the MBTA Green Line extension, the 6-story Joyce Cummings Center has become the iconic eastern gateway to Tufts’ campus. The 150,000 square foot building serves as the multidisciplinary home of the Data Intensive Studies Center, the Fletcher School executive education programs, the Center for Applied Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and the Gordon Institute, along with programs in computer science, economics, and mathematics.

The interior design is focused on flexibility with a multitude of seating nooks, open lounges, and classrooms to support individual study and group collaboration.

The strong geometric architectural language throughout the project provided the armature for an equally engaging lighting design vocabulary that endeavors to not only reflect the dynamic forms and spaces but also the diversity and energy of students and faculty alike.

This bustling spirit gathers in the plaza-like main lobby and gets directed outward to a series of multipurpose classrooms and upward, via the grand stair, to a popular open lounge punctuated by a bespoke edge-lighted sculptural blade fixture that slowly transforms throughout the day in a rhythmic, clock-like fashion.
