Situated on a prominent corner of Edmonton’s Sir Winston Churchill Square, the Art Gallery of Alberta synthesizes the relationship between the urban grid and the wild splendor of northern Alberta.Modernizing the existing 1960’s Brutalist building with sustainable solutions, the insulating zinc envelope clads the existing gallery block and the gallery additions balanced above. The Atrium evokes the Aurora Borealis, captures natural daylight and reveals the beauty of the seasons, while gathering visitors and directing them through the museum. The signature lighting motif is the Atrium stair’s Lightfin Doubling as donor display wall and vertical circulation iconography, the backlit panels light the stair, while recalling the glow of the icy north.
