The Paul J. DiMare Center at UMass Chan Medical School is a 354,000-square-foot, LEED Gold facility dedicated to advancing translational medical research. Designed in collaboration with ARC and ZGF Architects, the building supports over 70 principal investigators and includes flexible open labs, highly specialized research environments, and a state-of-the-art vivarium. Home to the Horae Gene Therapy Center, Neurology and Neurobiology departments and multiple genetics-focused programs, the center consolidates diverse disciplines to foster collaboration and scientific discovery.
Lam Partners provided lighting design that responds to the center’s highly technical requirements, while supporting energy efficiency and occupant well-being. Working in tandem with the architectural team, the lighting strategy balanced daylight access with glare control, especially across lab zones and perimeter offices. Integrated with the building’s high-performance envelope and geothermal heating and cooling systems, the lighting contributes to the center’s net-zero-ready ambitions—delivering a luminous environment designed for innovation, precision, and sustainability.
