The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is a striking addition to the Kansas City skyline, housing a world-class concert hall and performing arts theater beneath a sculptural shell of stainless steel and glass. A dramatic, glass-enclosed lobby sweeps along the building’s south façade, offering panoramic views of the city while serving as a luminous public gathering space that unites the two performance venues.
The lighting design takes a deliberately minimalist approach, allowing the bold architectural forms and expansive glazing to remain the primary visual experience. Carefully integrated illumination provides visual comfort and clarity while emphasizing the lobby’s sweeping geometry and structural rhythm. Subtle layers of light reinforce the sense of transparency and openness after dark, transforming the lobby into a glowing lantern that contributes to the building’s iconic nighttime presence on the Kansas City skyline.
